Kürzlich habe ich einen Star auf dem Schuldach singen gesehen. Er war so wunderschön mit seinem glänzenden Gefieder, dass ich ihn gemalt habe. Die kleinen Blüten sind jene der „Schokoladenblume“ (Schokoladen-Kosmee), einer Pflanzenart aus Mexiko, die ich neulich in einem Blumenladen entdeckt habe – und in die ich mich sofort verliebt habe.

EN: Recently, I saw a starling singing on the roof . It was so beautiful with its shimmering plumage that I decided to paint it. The small blossoms are those of the “chocolate cosmos,” a plant species from Mexico that I discovered in a flower shop not long ago — and instantly fell in love with.

Im Herbst letzten Jahres wurde ein Elch im kleinen Grenzort Bischofsreut im Bayerischen Wald gesichtet. Zuvor war er bereits in Österreich gesehen worden. Eine Frau fotografierte ihn nachts, als er seelenruhig durch das verregnete Dorf spazierte. Das war auch für mich eine solche Sensation, dass ich ihn sofort malte – so, wie er da auf der Hauptstraße entlanglief. Da hab ich ihn gemalt.
Den ganzen Winter über wurde er dann immer wieder im Nationalpark Šumava in Tschechien gesehen. In den sozialen Medien tauchten ständig neue Fotos von „Elch Emil“ auf, denn Emil – mit seinen drei Jahren noch recht jung – hat inzwischen viele begeisterte Fans. „Náš milovaný los Emil!“, schrieben unsere Nachbarn. „Wir lieben dich, Emil, pass gut auf dich auf!“
Ende April tauchte Emil plötzlich im Landkreis Deggendorf auf und knabberte an Sträuchern eines kleinen Hofes, während Kinder ihm zusahen. Dann zog er weiter Richtung Dingolfing, und nun soll er sogar im Vilstal – also ganz in unserer Nähe – gesichtet worden sein.
Welch eine Freude! „Wir lieben dich, Emil!“ möchte auch ich am liebsten rufen. Liebe verbindet über Grenzen hinweg – die schönste Form der Völkerverständigung. Ob er uns wohl einmal in Bad Birnbach besucht? Dieser Gedanke hat mich so bewegt, dass ich heute Nacht von ihm geträumt habe: Er stand neugierig vor einem Mädchen, das einen Beutel mit einem Goldfisch trug. Und genau so habe ich ihn nun gemalt: Elch Emil vor dem Mädchen mit Goldfisch. Natürlich in Bad Birnbach 😊
Übrigens, im Buch meines Großvaters „Aus Wald und Flur“ von 1938 wird der Elch als heimisches Wild beschrieben.
Emil im September 2025 in Bischofsreut
Last autumn, a moose was spotted in the border village of Bischofsreut – soon affectionately called “Moose Emil.” Throughout the winter he appeared again and again in Šumava National Park, and his fan community grew quickly on social media. At the end of April he showed up in the Deggendorf district, wandered toward Dingolfing, and was even seen in the Vilstal – very close to us.
The thought that he might one day visit Bad Birnbach moved me so much that I dreamed of him: Emil standing curiously in front of a girl holding a bag with a goldfish. That is exactly how I painted him – Moose Emil and the Girl with the Goldfish, set in my hometown.

Ich hab hier versucht, Eleonore von Aquitanien darzustellen, die im 12. Jahrhundert sowohl Königin von Frankreich als auch Königin von England war. Sie wird auch „Königin der Troubadoure“ genannt. Eine faszinierende und mächtige Frauenfigur aus dem Mittelalter.

FR: J’ai ici représenté Aliénor d’Aquitaine, cette femme exceptionnelle qui fut au XIIᵉ siècle d’abord reine de France, puis reine d’Angleterre. Surnommée la “reine des troubadours”, elle demeure l’une des figures les plus fascinantes et influentes du Moyen Âge. J´ai écouté le podcast à son sujet sur France Culture pendant que je peignais.
